Health Researchers from DTU have patented an invention that uses naturally produced substances from gut bacteria of the bifidobacteria type to reduce the risk of allergies and asthma. Allergies and asthma affect an increasing number of children worldwide, but now an international research group led by DTU has identified a previously unknown mechanism that can reduce the risk of allergies and asthma later in life.

Biotechnology DTU researchers are behind a potentially groundbreaking antivenom that could revolutionize the treatment of venomous snakebites in Africa. Snakebite envenoming is among the world's deadliest yet most overlooked tropical disease. The WHO has classified snakebite envenoming as one of 21 neglected tropical diseases, resulting in between 100,000 and 150,000 deaths worldwide each year.

Leopard-spotted deposits in fossilized mud on Mars may have been left behind by living organisms. But to be absolutely sure, we need to bring the samples down to Earth, researchers from DTU and NASA write in the scientific journal Nature. For five years, NASA's Mars rover Perseverance has been driving around the red planet with equipment from DTU on board.

Health Technology Researchers from DTU and Amager and Hvidovre Hospital will have access to the Gefion supercomputer in a series of projects on women's diseases in a new collaboration with the Danish Centre for AI Innovation, DCAI. The healthcare system lacks knowledge about women's diseases and how to treat them.

Health technology Engineers are working with doctors to develop wearable digital health technologies that can prevent and treat diseases at home, helping healthcare services reduce outpatient visits and readmissions. We live longer. At the same time, the number of elderly people with a wide combination of chronic diseases is increasing, and recruiting nurses and doctors is becoming more difficult.

Innovation Researchers have developed a new light technology that appears to improve cognitive function in Alzheimer's patients in clinical trials. The hope is that the idea can be developed into ordinary lamps that people can install to prevent the disease. Researchers at DTU and UC Berkeley, together with spin-out company OptoCeutics, have invented a non-medical form of therapy that can improve brain activity: light-based deep brain stimulation that induces a specific type of brain wave that Alzheimer's patients benefit from.

A transparent coating that prevents growth of algae on underwater solar cells has been developed for the U.S. Navy. DTU researchers have developed an important coating for underwater drones and solar cell platforms. The coating will not adorn the drones in different colours, but rather act as a self-polishing coating that keeps algae and other biofouling away from the drones' built-in solar cells when they are on mission below sea level.

DTU's technologies and innovations must benefit people, society and the planet. The research and solutions must be responsible, and work in society in a way that benefits as many people as possible. DTU wants to create technology for people. Therefore, considerations about how a new technology can affect people - the social impact - must be included in DTU's research designs right from the idea phase.
